Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease is inflammation of the gums and supporting tissues of a tooth caused by the accumulation of dental plaque on the tooth surfaces.

The two main types are gingivitis (inflammation limited to gums) and periodontitis (inflammation involves the periodontal ligaments and jaw bone).

Treatment of periodontal disease is a combination of professional periodontal therapy under general anaesthetic and home care measures (daily toothbrushing and adjuncts) performed by the owner.
